Mustang is unlike anywhere else in Nepal. Sitting behind Annapurna and Dhaulagiri, protected from monsoon rain, it has a completely different character from the rest of the country. The landscape is dry and dramatic, full of red and ochre cliffs, ancient cave monasteries carved into the rock, and a high desert plateau that feels closer to Tibet than to the Nepal most visitors know. Mustang was a closed kingdom until 1992 and very few outsiders ever entered before that. That history gives the entire region a depth and distinctiveness that no other trekking destination in Nepal can match. Mustang is the right choice for trekkers who want more than just mountain views.
